Tether Gold Gains Regulatory Recognition in Abu Dhabi

Tether Gold (XAUT) has been recognized as an accepted spot commodity by the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM), one of the Middle East's largest international financial centers. The designation allows licensed firms operating within ADGM to offer services related to XAUT within a regulated framework, as tokenized asset adoption continues to expand across traditional financial markets.

Key takeaways:

  • XAUT is now recognized as an approved spot commodity by ADGM
  • Tether Gold's total value locked (TVL) has more than tripled over the past year, reaching approximately $2.86 billion

What ADGM's Approval Means for XAUT

According to Cointelegraph, XAUT has been formally recognized as an accepted spot commodity within the Abu Dhabi Global Market. This gives licensed firms in the jurisdiction a clear regulatory path to offer services tied to the tokenized gold asset, provided they hold the necessary approvals. Following the announcement, XAUT's price rose roughly 1%.

This approval builds on ADGM's earlier recognition of Tether's stablecoin (USDT) as an "accepted fiat-referenced token," expanding the number of Tether-linked products now recognized within the region's regulatory framework.

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said the approval gives licensed companies a clearer path to offering XAUT-related services. ADGM added that broadening the range of approved products and services supports business growth for firms operating within the center.

Tether Gold's TVL Has Tripled in a Year

Data from DefiLlama shows Tether Gold's total value locked has grown from roughly $826 million to approximately $2.86 billion over the past year, more than tripling in that span.

That kind of growth suggests XAUT's use case is expanding well beyond simple exposure to gold price movements, into more active roles within DeFi and lending markets.

Beyond Trading: New Use Cases for Tokenized Gold

XAUT is also finding utility outside of trading and custody. In June, Bitcoin lending platform Ledn announced plans to add XAUT as loan collateral later this year. That would let customers borrow against their tokenized gold holdings without having to sell the underlying asset, a use case that mirrors how crypto-backed lending already works for Bitcoin and other digital assets.

Where XAUT Fits in the Broader Tokenized Commodities Market

Tokenized commodities currently hold a combined value of around $4.46 billion, accounting for roughly 13% of the broader real-world asset (RWA) market, which is valued at approximately $34.73 billion.

Regulatory recognition like ADGM's approval tends to matter most at this stage of the market, it doesn't move price dramatically on its own, but it removes friction for institutional players who need clear legal footing before integrating an asset into custody, lending, or trading products.
